[Poetry] Empathy, or O How My Soul Shall Sing

I didn’t sleep last night
Because my heart heard yours.
It heard your pain, your weariness
It heard your sadness, your despair
It heard your exhaustion, your worry.
It cried tears of solidarity
It cried tears of empathy
It cried tears of compassion
It cried tears of healing.
It cried, and I prayed for peace.

I didn’t sleep last night
Because my heart heard yours.
It sang to you a song of fellowship
A song of comfort and joy
Of hope and acceptance
Of love and kindness.

I didn’t sleep last night
Because you needed to
My heart had strength to share
And share it did
Whether you heard it or not
It sang of your soul to the heavens
It sang of your spirit and your life
It sang of your love and your joy
It sang because you couldn’t.
It sang and I prayed for peace.
